Rediscover Rutabagas - Sweet “Swedes” of the Garden

Grown as an annual but actually a biennial, they are a perfect crop for late fall harvest. They’re very hardy and can be left in the ground until freezing weather sets in for good, as late as Thanksgiving in the far northern areas of the United States.

Looking After Your Paphiopedilum Orchid

Paphiopedilums in particular, are a very good, hassle-free variety, perfectly suited to the less green-fingered amongst us. Soil Savvy For Organic Gardens

There are three essential layers in the ground. Parent rock is the underlying layer, with subsoil and topsoil above that. A good balance for the topsoil is 5% organic matter, 25% water, 25% air, and 45% mineral.

Turnips - Maligned and Misunderstood But Still Tasty

Turnips have gotten a bad rap over the years. Misunderstood and much-maligned, they are actually a very tasty and sweet vegetable (especially when kissed by fall frosts). Turnips withstand even moderate frosts and are a good crop to plant for a late fall harvest.
